“When I first accessed the court documents of the case of the State of Chile against the members of the so-called Recta Provincia, I knew there was a story that needed to be told. The persecution of the Chilean justice system against a witchcraft organization contained in itself all the depth to address the violent process of colonization of the modern state over native communities in the area. A project of annihilation of worldviews that sought to build one world over another.

This colonization process interests me not only as a confrontation of external forces, but also from an intimate dimension; manifested in bodies, emotions, beliefs and bonds. Therefore, Sorcery is situated from Rosa Raín, a girl who in the midst of this disputed territory must live a radical journey between cosmovisions, leaving behind worlds to find her own.

Thus, in this story, witchcraft acquires a profound meaning: a force capable of transforming, empowering, and creating new forms of relationships. Sorcery as resistance to the colonizing project that manifests itself outside and inside Rosa.

My cinematographic intention has been to delve deeply into the territory and work with the communities marked by this story. Their experiences and stories not only gave life to the script but were fundamental to understand that the persecution of the so-called sorcerers of Chiloé was more than a case of the late 1880s. Its power lies in how that same violence against the different resonates and persists to this day, as if that trial had never ended.”
