SYNOPSIS
SYNOPSIS
FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a feature film, though carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country. FATHER is set in the Northeast US, MOTHER in Dublin, Ireland, and SISTER BROTHER in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental – a comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy.

COMMENTS OF
THE DIRECTOR
FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a kind of anti-action film, its subtle and quiet style carefully constructed to allow small details to accumulate – almost like flowers being carefully placed in three delicate arrangements. Collaborations with the masterful cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux, the brilliant editor Afonso Gonçalves and other frequent collaborators elevate what started as words on a page into a form of pure cinema.

Françoise Lebrun
as MADAME GAUTIER
Françoise Lebrun's first ambition was to become a film director. To this end, she enrolled at Sciences Po and wrote freelance articles for the magazines Image et son.
Then Communication, directed by the famous sociologist Roland Barthes.
It was through this activity that, at the Evian Film Festival in 1964, she met a certain Jean Eustache, who had come to present his short film Les Mauvaises fréquentations. She became his companion and assistant, until they separated in the early 1970s.
The director (who ended his life in 1981) offered her her first major role in 1973 in La Maman et la Putain. In this critically acclaimed drama (it won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, and is still considered a cult film today), she plays Veronika, the mistress of the hero Alexandre (Jean-Pierre Léaud), whom he meets on the street. Seemingly discreet, she in fact conceals a great freedom of morals...
Françoise Lebrun went on to work with prestigious directors such as André Téchiné (Souvenirs d'en France), Michèle Rosier (Mon cœur est rouge), Charlotte Dubreuil (Ma chérie) and above all Paul Vecchiali (En haut des marches, Trous de mémoire, À vot' bon cœur, ... Et tremble d'être heureux). At the same time, the actress pursued a career on the stage (Le Défi by Jean-Claude Perrin, Remagen by Jacques Lassalle, La Fuite en Egypte by Bruno Bayen, etc.).
During the 1990s, Françoise Lebrun kept a low profile in the film world, although she did appear in the comedies Pullman paradis by Michèle Rosier, Pour rire ! by Lucas Belvaux and On a très peu d'amis by Sylvain Monod.
She worked at the TNS for 7 years, and also published three books with Lafont (livre de noël, livre de pates and le livre de l'anniversaire) and launched the “les enfants dans l'histoire” collection for Casterman, for which she produced 4 volumes.
She was more active in the 2000s, appearing more or less furtively in films as varied as Malraux, tu m'étonnes!, Inguelezi, Fragments sur la grâce, Il sera une fois, Le Scaphandre et le Papillon, La Clef, Séraphine, Demain dès l'aube and Quelque chose à te dire.
Françoise Lebrun's film career continued to expand in 2010. After the TV film Comme une mère, she reunited with Guillaume Nicloux in La Clé pour Holiday, L'Affaire Gordji, histoire d'une cohabitation, La Religieuse, L'Enlèvement de Michel Houellebecq and Thalasso. She also appeared in (mainly on the drama side) Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse, Fever, A 14 ans, Le Cancre, Ma vie avec James Dean, Le Semeur, L'Amour Debout and La Part du soupçon. She also appears in the Mytho series.
In 2022, Françoise Lebrun played the main character in Gaspar Noé's Vortex, a dying person suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It was because he was a fan of La Maman et la Putain that the director of Irreversible offered her the role: “He more or less told me the story, but I had a kind of confidence in our relationship. I told myself that this man had seen what I'm capable of doing, and that he liked what was at the origin of my entire cinematic history. So I trusted him.
In 2013, Françoise Lebrun was made an Officier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Françoise Lebrun's other documentaries include Crazy Quilt (2011), dedicated to the gardens of England, as well as L'Homme qui montait son chapiteau and Romanes cirque tzigane, co-directed and focusing on the world of the circus.
